Q + A with Naomi Clark

What are you exploring in your latest paintings?
I am exploring kink and curves.

Tell us about what you're currently working on. Any exciting new projects?
I have a few exciting commissions I’m working on, as well as a large-scale painting for a group exhibition this fall in Philadelphia.

Tell us about your body of work called “Action Paintings”? You pose your paintings on the beach near your house?
Action paintings started as a conversation between movement, light, and wind. The beach is such a cinematic and open stage. I began using it like a backdrop, creating painterly tableaus.

What happens when you bring your work into nature as setting?
I see a great contrast between my work and nature. The colors, materials, and forms I use become even more electric and surreal in these natural spaces.

Tell us about your perfect day
Well I was just in Italy! I got up early, went to work, got a sandwich on the walk home, took a nap, then went back to the studio for a second round. At night, we all made dinner together and drank wine in the kitchen of our shared house, talking about what we worked on that day. There was a lake, so some days we swam too. I love having a space to work and time to make things. I love being around people who are thinking about art all the time. And I love feeling tired at the end of the day. Like, deep in-the-bones tired from working hard and talking and cooking. That feels satisfying at the end of the day.

You also teach art, what are some of your favorite assignments for students? Which ones do they have the most fun with?
We do a “Dream Room Drawing” at the beginning of the year where students make the bedroom of their dreams. It’s a great way to get to know them. We also make band flyers, which gives them a way to explore typography and messaging. They really enjoy making posters.

You’ve worked at quite large scales for some projects over the years, what do you love most about working big?
I just feel right when I’m thinking big. The scale helps me think bigger too. There’s a freedom that kicks in—I’m not afraid to mess up, so I can focus on how the work makes me feel as I’m making it.

How has being a former high school cheerleader made you a stronger person today?
Love this question! I think it has made me more positive and enthusiastic. I like lifting people up and bringing energy to a space. I think it has made me a better teacher and collaborator.
